Also known as pigment, Melanin is the substance that gives skin and hair its colour. In the skin Melanin is formed by Melanocytes and the more of them you have, the darker your skin. Melanin acts as the skin’s natural sun protection, so those with darker skins have more tolerance to the sun’s rays and don’t burn as easily as those with pale skins.
When your body over produces Melanin, it can lead to hyperpigmentation and discolouration of the skin. You can use skin care products that reduce and control the production of Melanin in the skin, lightening any dark areas and creating a brighter, more uniform complexion.
