An antioxidant is any ingredient that fights and neutralises free radicals. The body produces its own antioxidants to prevent damage to the skin, as free radicals break down collagen in the skin which causes it to age prematurely. As we age however, our body no longer produces a sufficient amount of antioxidants to keep the skin looking young and healthy.
You can get extra antioxidants from your skin care and your food, helping to protect the skin from damaging free radicals that are found in UV rays and the environment. Popular antioxidants are Vitamins A, C and E, Green Tea Extract and Zinc with foods like berries, broccoli and spinach being a great way to add antioxidants into your diet.
