What Is Melasma?

Melasma (or chloasma as it is also known) is an incredibly common skin condition where the skin develops light or dark brown pigmentation on the face, mainly on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin. This is due to unstable hormone levels which force the skin to produce an unbalanced amount of pigment.

Melasma can affect all skin tones and types but it mainly presents in women and tends to worsen during pregnancy, after spending time in the sunshine or from taking certain hormonal medication such as the contraceptive pill.
