Ageing is inescapable but it can also be a glorious thing! However, we know that you probably spend a lot of time scouring the internet for the best product that will get rid of wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet. But we want you to stop, look into the mirror and embrace those skin changes!
Whether we know it or not, we’re subtly reinforcing the message that ageing is a condition we need to battle. Anti-aging has been a beauty and skincare byword since the 1980’s when it was created by an advertising executive to sell products to older women. It makes sense that this category of products should have its own term due to its popularity, but it doesn’t mean that we need to be ashamed of natural skin changes.
Confront and Identify The Changes
When you notice your first wrinkle or grey hair, you may vocally say ‘oh no’. Instead of dreading these changes, try to embrace them. Our skin and body goes through a lot over our life and a small wrinkle is nothing compared to the accomplishments we have had throughout our lives. So the next time you spot a tell tale sign of ageing, shrug it off and look at them as an invitation to a wiser, more mature but just as fun self. Clinging to an illusion that we can stay and look young forever often leads to reliance on the approval of others to validate that. Nowadays, women’s sense of beauty is too dependent on external sources, rather than an internal experience.
Ageing is complicated but loving your skin shouldn’t be
Social media and celebrity culture of course doesn’t help. All the airbrushing, injectables and ubiquitous nipping and tucking gives us a false sense of reality but when you come to understand that everyone, behind all of the editing and surgery, does have the odd wrinkle or fine line, then embracing your own complexion will come naturally.
Your Own Personal Journey
Everyone is on their own ageing journey, so yours won’t be the same as someone else’s. Some people may want to embrace their signs of ageing by getting a few injectables here and there whereas some might want to use skin enhancing products or make-up to brighten areas that have become dull. Find what works for you and what helps you love the skin you’re in.
