How To Build a Basic Routine

Whatever your age or lifestyle, it’s never too late to start taking care of your skin and with a new year comes the perfect time to build yourself a basic skincare routine to take on 2020 with a healthy complexion. However, we understand it can be overwhelming trying to pick which products to use and when, which is why we are here with some top tips on how to build the perfect routine for you…

Before beginning your new routine, it’s important to take a look at your skin and establish what your main concerns are. You might suffer from acne, dry skin or just have an uneven complexion, so it’s important to identify what you’d like to improve about your complexion as different products can target different problems.

Step One: Cleanse

Cleansing is the most basic and essential step of any skincare routine because every day your skin comes into contact with environmental pollutants, dirt and make-up. It’s also important to start with a clean slate both morning and night so that the rest of your products are able to do their job effectively. Choosing a cleanser that suits your skin type can sometimes be tricky when there are so many available, but to simplify it just remember: a cream cleanser, like the Medik8 Cream Cleanse, is great for dry and sensitive skin whereas a gel cleanser or one that contains Salicylic Acid such as the Verso Acne Deep Cleanse, is going to unclog pores and prevent future breakouts.

Step Two: Tone

Toners prep your complexion for the rest of your routine by balancing the pH level of your skin, so they can be used both morning and night. Some toners can contain alcohol which can be drying, so try and go for a product that is soothing or directly addresses your skin concerns like the SKINCITY skincare Luminous Licorice Toner

Step Three: Serum

After toning, apply an antioxidant-rich serum to repair, nourish and correct any damage done to your skin during the day. Serums are lightweight, almost watery products that absorb quickly into the skin and can target concerns such as signs of ageing, like the Exuviance Collagen Triple Boost Serum, or the iS Clinical Active Serum which is great for addressing acne.

Step Four: Moisturise

Even if you have an oily skin type, moisturising is an essential part of your daily skincare routine. Proper hydration from a good moisturiser is going to give you that glowing, youthful complexion you crave and keep a rough, flaky face at bay. If you do have very oily, acne-prone skin, try a gel product like the Dermalogica UltraCalming Calm Water Gel which is lightweight and won’t clog your pores. You’ll benefit from richer, thicker creams if you have dry skin, so try something like the Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream to aid protecting your complexion and provide long-lasting hydration.

Step Five: Sunscreen

An SPF is a non-negotiable part of your morning skincare routine. Rain or shine, your skin will be exposed to UV rays and applying a sunscreen will not only protect your skin but prevent discolouration, the premature signs of ageing and skin cancer – our go-to is the Heliocare 360˚ Gel Oil Free SPF50. If you’re on the go, combine step four and five and use a moisturiser that contains SPF like the MAKETHEMAKE Vitamin C Tinted Moisturiser SPF30.
