Keeping an oily complexion balanced and shine-free is never more of a challenge than during the summer. From finding the right moisturiser to combating a make-up meltdown, here are some key products to help you maintain a balanced and matte complexion this season.
It’s all about balance
In simple terms, oily skin produces too much sebum. This imbalance means things like blemishes, blackheads and shine are incredibly common, so it’s important to try and restore some sort of balance so that your sebum production can normalise. The problem with summer is that higher temperatures cause the skin to produce more sebum and sweat than usual, so your routine needs to address this fact.
If you don’t already use a purifying cleanser, now is the perfect time to get one. Formulas that contain Salicylic Acid or natural clays can help rid the pores of blockages that can lead to breakouts, while also removing excess sebum from the surface. The Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser contains water-soluble Kaolin and Green Clays to balance the skin alongside cooling and refreshing plant extracts which help to minimise inflammation, making it the perfect summer cleanser for oily skins.
After cleansing, follow with a mildly exfoliating toner to further purify the pores. One that contains AHAs and BHAs, like the Cosmedix Purity Balance Exfoliating Prep Toner, is ideal as it uses acids to remove dead cells and natural antiseptic agents to detoxify and mattify the skin.
Switch to gel textures
Summer always offers up a conundrum for oily skins when it comes to hydration. Your skin might not feel dry, but it still needs moisture to stay healthy, however, applying a moisturiser often leaves the skin feeling greasy, weighed down and suffocated. The solution? Oil-free formulas and gel textures. Oily skin needs water not oil, so oil-free moisturisers and sunscreens are a no-brainer, especially during summer. Try the Murad Nutrient-Charged Water Gel, an ultra-lightweight, oil-free hydrator that quenches skin’s thirst using Peptides, B Vitamins and Minerals.
Follow this with an equally lightweight sunscreen. Traditional SPFs are notoriously greasy, but the Heliocare 360˚ Gel Oil Free SPF50 is different. It protects the skin against a wide range of external stressors – from UV rays to pollution – but feels comfortable and semi-matte on the skin, making it a pleasure to use and reapply throughout the day.
Mattify, mattify, mattify
One of the biggest issues oily skins face during the summer is shine. This over-production of sebum not only makes you feel greasy, but it can cause your make-up to slide around your face and lead to pimples. Your best option is to use a few key mattifying products towards the end of your skin care routine, right before you apply make-up. Apply a matte finish primer before foundation to reduce the chance of shine developing during the day and to give your base something to hold onto, prolonging its wear even on hot days. The Paula’s Choice Shine Stopper Instant Matte Finish transforms from a gel to a powder on the skin and uses Microsponge® Technology to keep the skin shine-free for up to six hours. Worried about getting shiny during the day? Pack the MAKETHEMAKE Oil Absorbing Sheets in your bag. These innovative sheets instantly soak up oil without disrupting the rest of your make-up, leaving you looking fresh and, most importantly, matte.
