We’re forever on the hunt for products to give us a healthy, youthful glow, so who better to share the secret to radiant skin than facialist to the stars Lord Gavin McLeod-Valentine, Global PR Director and Director of Studio Services for Intraceuticals. Skincity UK: Can you tell us a little bit about Intraceuticals and their formulas?
LGMV: Intraceuticals was founded on the understanding that dehydration is often the underlying cause of the first signs of visible ageing. The entire collection of professional serums and retail skin care incorporates a sophisticated blend of Hyaluronic Acid, nutrient-rich botanicals and next-generation peptide technology, for unparalleled results.
They have a lot of Hyaluronic Acid-based products in their range. Why is the ingredient so good for the skin?
One of the major characteristics of youth is a naturally full face and inherent glow. As we age, our internal Hyaluronic Acid production slows down causing lack of volume and a dull, flat look to one’s skin. By layering different molecular weights of hydration, the way Intraceuticals has pioneered, the skin is able to receive and retain moisture in a high-functioning way. Hyaluronic Acid is famous for its ability to bind a 1000 times its weight in water, therefore it’s the perfect anti-aging ingredient for combating significant dehydration. Dehydrated skin is unfortunately a sign of modern living, with everything from the blue light of our iPhones and lack of sleep to sun exposure and central heating and air-conditioning being a large source of our skin’s water loss.
Intraceuticals products work best when layered together – is there a basic rule that people can follow so that they know how to layer their skin care properly?
There’s a couple of rules to follow that will ensure the best results from your skin care. First rule of thumb, put the most active, concentrated ingredients on the skin first. If you are using a prescription strength Vitamin A or advanced serum – this should be your first step, with others following thereafter. Another way to think about it is lightest to heaviest. In the instance of Intraceuticals, they have developed a process called Intralayering. Each product stacks different molecular weights of hydration to the skin, with the Daily Serum employing a micro-weight of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) applied first, followed by the Hydration Gel with a medium weight of HA and then the Moisture-Binding Cream with a large molecule of HA. As the layers build up, the size of Hyaluronic molecule increases to lock and load hydration in place.
You work with a lot of A-List celebrities. How do you prepare their skin for the red carpet?
Celebrity clients are looking for instant results, with no downtime and certainly no redness or irritation to the skin. I start their treatment with a thorough double cleanse. First off, I’ll use the Brightening Cleanser from the Intraceuticals Opulence collection. This is more of a cream-based cleanser that works at removing make-up and impurities from the skin very quickly. I then follow this with a gentle exfoliation using the incredible Intraceuticals Enzyme Exfoliant, which utilises Papaya Enzymes and Bamboo Beads. Finally, I’ll wash it away with the Intraceuticals Gentle Cleanser. The next step is choosing the serums that I will use in their oxygen facial (the only treatment I would dare to give on the day of a big event). For first time clients, I always use the Intraceuticals Rejuvenate professional serums first. Packed with Vitamins A, C and E, Aloe Vera, Green Tea, Ginger Root Extract and micro-weight Hyaluronic Acid, this is the most hydrating, nourishing and gentle formulation, with almost no fear of an adverse reaction. Skin is immediately revived, restored and radiant. If I have worked frequently with a client, I’ll use the Intraceuticals booster collection. More often than not I reach for the Collagen + Booster Serum when a face is depleted of volume and has noticeable fat loss, and the Antioxidant + Booster Serum when my client is travel-weary or grey with fatigue.
Is there a skin concern that you see a lot of amongst your clients and how do you combat this?
The number one complaint or concern is general dehydration, with most stating that no matter how much water they drink their skin is still ashy, sallow and dull. The consumer has been well versed in what it means to be ‘dry,’ with a holy-grail moisturiser touted every other month as the one-stop solution. However, few of us truly understand that dryness is different from dehydration. Topical skin dryness is due to a lack of oil in the skin, whereby dehydration is caused by a loss of water. We are subjected to many technologies, environmental issues and bad habits that rob the water from our skin. Starting a client on the three-step hyaluronic layering by Intraceuticals is a game-changer for their skin. Re-acclimating the skin’s ability to receive and retain water is the first big step to a more youthful, vibrant and glowing appearance.
The Oxygen Facials from Intraceuticals are a real game-changer (our team who have had them loved the results!); can you tell us what the treatment entails and how it transforms the skin?
With the Oxygen Facial, Intraceuticals developed two distinct delivery systems, working in tandem to give an unmatched result; Oxygen and Micro-Hyaluronics. Oxygen, with its antibacterial and anti-microbial properties immediately calms, smoothes and alleviates sensitised skin, whether the cause is acne, rosacea, sunburn etc. Providing a cooling sensation for the skin, it is incredibly effective at removing heat and restoring balance. In the Intraceuticals treatment, the oxygen under pressure is used to provide a push to drive the serums deeper into the skin than they would topically go.
The micro-weight Hyaluronic Acid has a pied piper quality, dragging a slew of skin-beneficial ingredients with it, as it travels into the skin, providing deep hydration. The combination of the push of the oxygen and the pull of the HA molecule is unmatched in its ability to deliver nourishing actives to the skin for an immediate and accumulative result.
What are the best Intraceuticals products to prep the skin for a party?
The Intraceuticals Three-Step Intralayering products are the gold-standard for a party glow. Rejuvenate is tolerated by all and provides the most intense hydration to the skin. Opulence is a great choice for someone with more congested skin, or noticeable pigmentation. For clients with darker skin tones, from an Olive skin tone to African-American, the Opulence collection literally puts a bright light under the skin, for a show-stopping glow. Both skin care regimes can be followed immediately with make-up.
Which Intraceuticals product do your clients love the most and why?
Every client loves the Rejuvenate Three-Step collection, Eye Gel and Enzyme Exfoliant. A true favourite of my clients are the essential travel packs, which provide the Intralayering products in both Rejuvenate and Opulence lines, along with a mini Gentle Cleanser.
If you are new to the Intraceuticals range, which three products are the best to start with?
Hands down the Rejuvenate three-step kit in either the full-size or travel pack, depending on your budget. The Daily Serum, followed by the Hydration Gel and Moisture-Binding Cream is an essential for anybody looking to perfect, refine and revive their skins for now and the future.
