What’s better than one super-effective skin care product? Two, of course! Some ingredients and certain product types just work better together, so we’ve chosen some of our favourite duos to create the ultimate power couples for brighter, younger, clearer skin.
SPF + Antioxidants
One of the best and easiest to utilise skin care power couples is the hero pairing of a sunscreen and an antioxidant serum. UV filters and antioxidants work together to protect the skin against environmental damage, including everything from the sun’s rays to pollution and the blue light emitted by your smartphone. Paired together, they also make an effective shield against pigmentation, ensuring the skin remains even in tone and radiant for longer.
Cleansing Balm + Cleansing Gel
Pairing two cleansers together (or double cleansing) as part of your evening routine is the most effective way to remove all the nasties and impurities that have built up on the skin during the day, while also decongesting the pores and creating a clear, responsive surface environment which can absorb the ingredients in your serums and night creams better. Start by using an oil-based cleanser first (to remove make-up, impurities and excess sebum), followed by a more targeted gel or lotion formula as your second cleanse to remove bacteria and dead cells.
Hyaluronic Acid + Ceramides
To combat dry skin, you need to take a two-step approach: improve hydration levels within the skin and prevent moisture loss by strengthening the lipid barrier. A great way to do this is to pair Hyaluronic Acid with Ceramides. Hyaluronic Acid provides hydration and goes deep into the skin to replenish depleted moisture reserves, while Ceramides work at the surface to rebuild the lipid barrier and help close any gaps where water could escape from the skin.
Salicylic Acid + Retinol
Two of the most powerful ingredients for winning the war against breakouts, Salicylic Acid takes care of in-pore blockages, excess oils and imbalance, while Retinol encourages cell turnover to minimise old blemish marks and prevent future congestion which can lead to breakouts. A truly potent pairing, when using two such active ingredients together, it is important to ensure the skin is protected during the day with a sunscreen.
Exfoliator + Moisturiser
If you have dull, lacklustre or rough-feeling skin, the two products you need to include in your routine are an exfoliator and a moisturiser. An exfoliator removes dead, dry and damaged cells from the surface that are responsible for skin’s lack of luminosity while a moisturiser infuses the skin with a much-needed dose of hydration to plump and smooth the surface. This combination makes the skin incredibly light reflective and the more light it reflects, the more radiant it will appear.
Essence + Serum
Sometimes, two products that are incredibly similar in formulation and texture can team up to provide double the amount of skin-perfecting ingredients. Essences and serums are very lightweight and easy to absorb, making them the ideal products to layer directly on top of each other. An essence has more of a water-like texture so it should be applied first, followed by a serum which tends to have a thicker lotion or fluid texture.
Botanicals + Antioxidants
An effective power couple for sensitive and easily irritated skin is hard to find, as this type of complexion can often benefit from a minimal number of ingredients. However, using products that contain soothing botanicals and restorative antioxidants (some of which are also plant-based) together can prove beneficial, helping to strengthen and balance the skin with every application.
