When it comes to innovation and pushing the boundaries of what skincare can do, iS Clinical is the first place we turn to so to understand more about their products, their ideas and the future of anti-aging, we quizzed Clinical Director of Innovative Skincare Dr. Charlene DeHaven, the woman responsible for some of today’s greatest advances in the fields of anti-aging skin care…
Effortless Skin: The iS Clinical range is synonymous with high quality formulas but which product are you most proud of?
Dr. Charlene DeHaven: Many of our products possess very advanced technology however, one of the most thought-provoking to develop was the White Lightening Complex. Several years were required to design this complex formula that addresses all five steps in the skin’s pigmentation development process but we wanted a product that effectively treats hyperpigmentation while improving overall skin health and protecting against free radical damage at the same time. Luckily we achieved that!
Tackling hyperpigmentation and preventing the early signs of ageing are the main concerns for our customers – how would you suggest they address these concerns best?
Since sun exposure is THE most powerful trigger for pigmentation, one of the most important products to use daily is certainly a sunscreen. Antioxidant serums are also key to maintaining healthy skin because they assist in preventing the sunburn associated with UVB rays and also the below surface inflammation that comes with UVA exposure.
I would say that exfoliation is important too to remove any skin cells that appear dull or heavily pigmented but more mature users should avoid exfoliating excessively as it can cause micro-scratches and irritation. A barrier protectant or rich moisturiser is also great for all skin types and ages to limit the effects of environmental stress on the skin.
Recently the iS Clinical range has started to focus more on using Copper Peptides in its formulas – why is that?
There are many enzymes in the human body that require Copper to function properly including those used for collagen synthesis and cell metabolism. We use Copper Tripeptide-1 in our products because it is a substance that naturally occurs within the human body so it provides the best benefits for the skin. It has numerous benefits including increasing collagen production, fibroblast proliferation, down-regulating cancer cell development, assisting with tissue remodelling following trauma and anti-aging the skin.
The Sheald Recovery Balm was a huge hit with our customers and received a lot of praise from the press – what makes this such a special and unique product?
The Sheald Recovery Balm is quite beneficial in a wide variety of situations. Since it contains ingredients identical to the Ceramides found in the stratum corneum, it can step in to enhance skin barrier function in the period following an in-clinic procedure. It also contains natural botanicals which increase collagen synthesis which helps to heal and repair the skin, which works just as well for skin exposed to extreme weather as it does post-procedure.
Two exciting products that launched recently have expanded the iS Clinical regime – can you tell us a little bit more about them?
The first is the Tri-Active Exfoliant. This uses three separate exfoliating methods in one single formula; Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids encourage the natural shedding of worn out surface cells and gently clean out debris from within the pores, Enzymes from botanical sources dissolve dead cells and bonds holding them together, and exfoliating particles made from Cellulose (the substance that forms the cell wall of plants) buff the skin without causing irritation. If the user rubs harder on these particles, they simply disintegrate and do not injure skin unlike fragmented seeds and tiny bits of plastic previously used in other exfoliating skincare products.
The second is the Hydra Intensive Cooling Masque. This is a rich, luxurious product that refreshes and invigorates the skin while providing soothing hydration thanks to a blend of botanical antioxidants and botanically sourced Hyaluronic Acid.
Skincare technology is always evolving – what innovations do you predict will take over the industry in the coming years?
I think Peptides, Growth Factors, and other actives that are able to “talk to” stem cells within the skin will become increasingly important. I also think more will be learned about mitochondrial ageing and additional skincare ingredients will be developed to address this type of ageing in the future.
Finally, if you had to pick three iS Clinical products which ones would you choose?
First I would go with the Extreme Protect SPF30 as this product is so much more than just an effective broad-spectrum sunscreen. It is really a treatment product which also moisturises, provides antioxidant protection, anti-ages the skin, and serves as a make-up primer. Published studies have shown it also prevents DNA damage related to photo-aging.
Next, I would choose the Pro-Heal Serum Advance+. This product is able to neutralise a very large number of free radicals and effectively reaches inside the cell where it serves as an effective antioxidant. Finally I would go with the Active Serum. This multi-tasking product can be used by all skin types and is proven to help a wide variety of skin conditions and improves active acne, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture.
